The shapes and colors of Providence Canyon are beautiful and ironically result from farming and soil erosion in the nineteenth century.
It is unusual to see a canyon this majestic east of the Mississippi River and it is called Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon.
Providence Canyon State Park was established to preserve the canyon.
Canyon Trails
The canyon trails run along the creek bed on the canyon’s floor. They start at the bottom of the inclined path behind the visitor center and lead into nine canyons.
You have close-up views of the colorful layers on the sheer canyon walls and the intricate textures of pinnacles towering above the trails.
Loop Trail
The loop trail runs around the canyon’s rim and is easy to moderate. You can start from either the visitor center or the picnic area near the park entrance.
If you don’t plan to hike around the trail, you can enjoy views of the canyon from the overlooks behind the picnic area.
It is breathtaking to look out at the canyon, reaching the horizon. Looking down at the colors of the wall layers and pinnacle shapes from above is equally amazing.
Which Trails
First, touring the canyon floor helps you better appreciate what you see from the rim above.
If you have one day, hike the Canyon Trails and then visit the overlooks behind the picnic area on your way out.
If you have two days, hike the Canyon Trails on day one, then the Loop Trail on day two.
If you have more days and are looking to hike an extremely rugged and difficult trail, check out the Backcountry Trail.
Camping
There are six primitive available for backpackers, and they require a permit.
Florence Marina State Park is an easy drive from Providence Canyon and has campsites for tents, trailers, and RVs. It also has cottages for rent.
Other Activities
The Visitor Center is open daily with exhibits, presentations, and information about the park. The picnic area is large, with well-appointed shelters that can be reserved. There are various annual events to attend. Check the park website for the latest event schedule.
Providence Canyon State Park is a delightful excursion near Lumpkin, Georgia. It is well worth a side trip if you are visiting the area. There are activities for people of all ages and physical abilities to enjoy.
